Izushi ware, known as Izushi-Yaki, is a porcelain made in Izushi, Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture. High-quality clay that contains quartz and silica mica and extreme low iron delivers Izushi-Yaki’s pure whiteness, which is rare in Japan. Paintings in subdued tones applied to this white surface is a distinctive characteristic. Some Izushi-Yaki features ornate carvings. Intricate patterns, carved by skilled hands after initial kilning, is another highly cherished feature of Izushi-Yaki.
