Lift the lid of the rounded outer cup and there is another cup inside, and another — six in all, each turned to nest inside the next. Nesting vessels are an old piece of Japanese storage wisdom, and this set has always doubled as a party piece: in the traditional drinking game, a roll of the dice decided who drank, and from which cup.
Each cup is turned in azusa, Japanese cherry birch, and finished in natural urushi lacquer, a deep brown that warms and clears with use. Closed, the set is a single 3.3-inch cup; opened, it sets a table for six.
Serve sake, or use the cups for small appetizers — pickles, edamame, a spoonful of something salty — alongside.
