Utatsu takes its name from a mountain near the workshop in Kaga, Ishikawa — the idea being a bowl you keep close, the way the mountains keep watch. It is the everyday bowl of the shokyu line: about 4.3 inches across, sized for miso soup or a serving of rice, and under four ounces in the hand.
Turned from a single block of Japanese zelkova, the classic wood of Yamanaka lacquerware — dense, straight-grained, warm honey in color. The clear nano-glass coating seals the surface so food won’t stain or stick, while leaving the grain exactly as it came off the lathe. Grain and color vary from piece to piece.
Utatsu nests inside the larger Dainichi Bowl when the shelf is full.
