FROM OBIHIRO, HOKKAIDO
Hokkaido is Japan’s northern island: dairy country, cold winters, wide farmland. ROKKATEI has been baking there, in the town of Obihiro, since 1933. The name means house of the six-petaled flower—the snow crystal.
For most of its history the company kept its shops on the island, which is why a box of these has always meant that someone made the trip. Hokkaido butter, Hokkaido cream, Hokkaido azuki beans: the ingredients do not travel far before they are baked.
In 2025 that changed a little. ROKKATEI opened its first store outside Japan, in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
The Wrapping Paper
The Factory
The wildflowers on the box were painted by Naoyuki Sakamoto, a Hokkaido farmer who spent his life drawing the plants growing around his fields. ROKKATEI has used his work since 1961, and in Japan people recognize the paper before they read the name. It is the reason these boxes get handed over rather than handed out.
At WAZA
ROKKATEI first came to WAZA in 2025, as a pop-up marking the opening of its California store. It found its audience quickly, and has been part of the shop ever since.

Marusei
Butter Cookies –
12 Pieces
Rich butter and a short, crisp snap. Each cookie is stamped with the Marusei mark of Bansai Company, the pioneer group that settled Obihiro in the 1880s—the same mark that has been on the packaging ever since.

Rich Land
Cheese Sablés –
9 pieces
Butter and Edam cheese in a sablé shaped like a brick silo, the structure that stands over the Tokachi plain. Savory before it is sweet—it works with coffee in the afternoon and with a glass of wine later.
Every individual wrapper carries a short poem written by a child from the Tokachi area. They are in Japanese; ask us and we will tell you what yours says.

ROKKATEI in California
ROKKATEI’s US flagship store is at Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga, about an hour east of Los Angeles. The full Hokkaido lineup, in a building that looks like it was airlifted from Obihiro.
