ROKKATEI has been baking in Obihiro, on Japan's northern island, since 1933 — dairy country, where the butter does not travel far before it is used.
These are simple cookies that depend entirely on that. Rich butter, a short crisp snap, and only enough sugar to carry it. Nothing is decorated and nothing is hidden.
The Marusei name runs through ROKKATEI's range. It is on the butter cookie sandwich the company is best known for, and it is stamped into each of these cookies — the mark of Bansai Company, the pioneer group that settled Obihiro in the 1880s. It has been on the packaging ever since these first went on sale.
There is rum and brandy in the dough — not enough to taste as alcohol, but enough to round the butter out. Good with black coffee, better with tea. They keep well and travel well, which is why a box of these is what people bring back from Hokkaido.
